Malta considers outsourcing emergency care to the private sector
10 September 2024 | Country Update
In July 2024, the Maltese Ministry of Health and Active Ageing issued
request for proposals from the private sector for the outsourcing of
publicly funded emergency care services to private operators to ease
pressures on public hospitals – particularly Mater Dei – and improve
hospital efficiency. The likely treatments that would be outsourced
include those for uncomplicated head injuries, wound suturing, chest
infections, skin infections, urinary infections, stable abdominal pain
and gastroenteritis. Hints of private sector involvement in the
emergency care setting have been dropped by the government since early
2024. Formal plans to implement these changes have not yet been
announced.
